How You Can Help
We understand how important it is as parents and carers to be able to support your children. We hope these guides will enable you to do just that. At Longwood we have a huge response to our “Family Fun Homework” tasks and our learners proudly discuss the process they have undertaken with a range of family members which is a joy to hear.
Probably one of the easiest ways to help your child is to read each day. Our reading guide hopefully will provide a range of activities that will make reading a joy and not a chore for all. Reading aloud with an adult is important throughout the primary years. Even if your child is a fluent reader, having time to discuss the story for example the character personalities and actions, the "wow" words used by the author is a valuable way to develop reading skills.
Our Handwriting guide is easy to follow but a great way to support your child. Well presented and neat handwriting fills our learners with confidence.
We use the synthetic phonics program called Little wandle to support our reading. We understand that this can be confusing for parents so hopefully this guide will support you in participating in this stage of your child’s learning journey.
Supporting Maths appears to fill you with dread however telling the time, estimating, measuring and mental calculations are all part of daily life. Practising times tables is extremely important. Children should have rapid recall of times tables facts and also be able to say the division facts too e.g. 7 x 8 = 56 and therefore 56 divided by 7 equals 8. " Rapid recall" should be within Five Seconds - they should not have to count through the table facts to get there.
We hope these guides give you the confidence you need to help at home however, any of our staff will be happy to explain and demonstrate any of our strategies as we understand some learners prefer to be shown ( I know I do!).
